Willits Photo Club members are featured at the July show at the Willits Cultural Arts Center, which is devoted to a Frontier Days theme.
The photo club will still do its annual WCA show in the fall, club president Erin Creekmur said. "This is a special show," she said. "The theme is anything Willits, hometown or Western and Frontier Days." The show will open on Saturday, July 7, with an artist's reception featuring music and refreshments from 7 to 9 p.m., and run through July 29.
Participating photographers are: Jenny Sinter, Erin Creekmur, Craig Gardner, Stacey Patton, Dorothy L. Asbury, Roger Wear, Wended Miller, Carolyn Carpenter, Steve Eberhard, Maria Steffen, and Laytonville students Isabella Gregory and Kelley Carter.
Creekmur likes landscapes, and one of her photos in the show, "October Valley," is a beautiful shot of old barn familiar to anyone who drives in the East Valley. "I think it's where East Valley and East Hill met up," Creekmur said. "That shot was taken in October last year. I had a morning free, and parked on the side of the road somewhere, and walked around and took pictures of the area. Willits has so many interesting old barns and farm equipment that inspires me to take pictures."
In keeping with the Western theme, the show also includes leather and ironwork items crafted by guest artists Mike and Mary Ann Underhill of Underhill's Western Craft. Mike is a blacksmith, and he will be exhibiting ironwork including custom fireplace tool sets, kitchen
tool sets (including a steak turner, fork, ladle and spatula on a stand), branding irons, and decorative iron flowers. Mary Anne does a variety of leatherwork, including "a lot of horse tack," she said. "That's probably what I do most of." Much of her horse tack "is out there being used and getting dirty," she said, and not suitable for a show, but "if I can part with it," she laughed, she plans to bring her own saddle and chinks (short chaps), that she made herself to show, as well as belts and wallets done in traditional Western style. "We'll also be showing a lot of little gift items, like coasters and picture frames," she said. The Underhills have a studio on East Hill Road and will also have a booth at the Frontier Days celebration. Check their Facebook page or call 459-6312 for more information. The Willits Photo Club meets monthly, on the second Saturday of each month, from 10 a.m. to noon. The meeting is usually at J.D. Redhouse, but the meeting this month, Saturday, July 7, will be at the Cultural Arts Center. The club also has a Yahoo group called "Willits Photography Club."
"I've been coming to the Willits Photography Club for about six years," member Steve Eberhard said. "I'm not a club kind of guy, but this has been an enriching experience for me. We bring photos to share, critique and learn from each other. We usually give ourselves an assignment for the group each month to push our abilities and creativity. We also talk about computer processing of photos. It doesn't matter your ability.... Everybody is a photographer these days. Some use cell phones, and some have high-end equipment, it doesn't matter. Our meetings are pretty relaxed, Mendo style. If anyone wants to check it out, you are welcome."
The Willits Photo Club show opens Saturday, July 7 at the Willits Cultural Arts Center, 71 E. Commercial St. Gallery hours are Thursday and Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 12 to 3 p.m. Check www.willitscenterforthearts.org or call 459-1726 for more information.
